Bernard S. Stano, Sr. 88, of Whitehall, passed away October 22, 2016. He was the loving husband of 66 years to Louise A. (Reck) Stano. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Victor Stano and Theresa (Zatko) Stano. Bernard served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1948. He retired in 1985 from Western Electric after 35 years of service. Bernard also taught the accordion in Allentown and Bethlehem. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Slovak Catholic Church. He was also a member of the former St. John’s Club and the American Legion Post #567. Bernard enjoyed bowling and was a devout Phillies and Eagles fan.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11AM in St. John the Baptist Slovak Catholic Church 924 N. Front St. Allentown. Burial to follow in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Whitehall.

Anna Schaffer
Anna V. (Vastyshak) Schaffer, 92, of Allentown, passed away August 25, 2016 in her home. She was loving wife of the late John P. Schaffer. Born in Footedale, PA Fayette County, she was the daughter of the late Metro and Anna (Kerbal) Vastyshak. Anna retired from the AT&T, the former Western Electric, and was member of the Telephone Pioneers. Anna was a member of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church and St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Daughter-Patricia and husband Richard Zavilla of Florida; Grandchildren- Craig and wife Mary Zavilla of Utah, Kara Zavilla and husband Bryan Kearney of Media, PA; Great Grandson- Braden Zavilla.

Robert Soha
Robert J. Soha, 87, of Allentown, passed away August 17, 2016. He was the loving husband of 63 years to Mildred (Mazurek) Soha. Born in Old Forge, he was the son of the late John and Katherine (Wozniak) Soha. Robert served in the U.S. Army (Special Forces) during the Korean War. He retired as an accountant from Fuller Co. and then from Dual Temp Fuels. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Slovak Catholic Church. Robert was also a member of the NRA, participating in many shooting sports with the NRA and 4-H, and enjoyed Tai Chi.
Survivors:
Wife- Mildred Soha; Daughter- Nanette Busolits and husband Jaime of Allentown; Son- Robert Soha of Allentown; Grandchildren- Shawn and wife Theresa Busolits, Jill Busolits. He was predeceased by his brothers- John and Steven Soha.

Josephine Sokalsky
Josephine A. (Karash) Sokalsky, 95, of Allentown passed away July 28, 2016. Born in Plainsville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Alice Karash. Josephine and her late husband Joseph had owned and operated Court Restaurant for 15yrs and then she worked for Americus Hotel. She was a member of St. Marys Ukrainian Orthodox Church. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting.
Survivors: Son- Joseph and fiancé Debra Bower; Sister- Cora Rickard; Sister-In-Law- Annette Karash. She was predeceased by siblings- Alex, Genevieve Brishcar and Eleanor Hoffert.

Joseph T. Sembrot, M.D.
Joseph T. Sembrot, M.D., a loving husband, father and grandfather, died at 80 years old on July 17, 2016. Dr. Sembrot was born on August 29, 1935 in Blakely, Lackawanna County, PA. He was the son of William H. and Veronica Justina (Podrasky) Sembrot. He was married to Rosie M. (Mikos) Sembrot on November 12, 1960. He was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Debora Lynn who died at ten years of age. He is survived by his daughter, Attorney Mary Sembrot Croly and her husband, Attorney Peter B., as well as his grandsons, Michael and Matthew Croly of Larchmont, N.Y. He is also survived by his son, Attorney Joseph M. Sembrot and his wife, Mary Beth, as well as his granddaughter Samantha Sembrot and grandson, Joseph W. Sembrot of Harrisburg, PA. His brother, Dr. William B Sembrot predeceased him and is survived by his wife, Barbara, lives in Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County.
Dr. Sembrot was a magna cum laude graduate of Temple University and a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine in 1961. He completed an internship at the Allentown Hospital in 1962. Thereafter he entered the United States Air Force and completed the Air Force’s Flight Surgeons’ School in San Antonio, Texas. He was assigned as a Flight Surgeon to Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. He accompanied the base commander, a major general, to Tansanute Air Force in Saigon, Viet Nam in November 1964.
Upon his discharge from the Air Force in 1965 he completed a two year Internal Medicine Residency at Hahnemann Hospital Medical School in Philadelphia. In 1967 he completed a year of training in the subspecialty of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Hahnemann Medical School.
In 1968 Dr. Sembrot opened a private office for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Internal Medicine in Allentown. In addition, he worked in a part time capacity in the Medical Department of Western Electric, Allentown during this period.
In 1992 he closed his private practice to become a full time physician at the Allentown V.A. Out-Patient Medical Department. He considered it a very great honor to be the doctor to many WWII Veterans, whom he had so much admired as a youth during WWII.
He continued his medical education with weekly medical conferences at the Allentown Hospital, and the Lehigh Valley Hospital. In addition, he took weekly medical courses at the National Institute of Health in Washington, Harvard Medical School, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, and for more than 25 years of study at Johns Hopkins Medical School Baltimore at their weekly course in Internal Medicine. He was Board Certified in Internal Medicine and in Endocrinology. He served as a Church Council President for 8 years at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Allentown where he was a member.

Fannie Salash
Fannie (Morykin) Salash, 96, of Bethlehem, passed away May 16, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of 64 yrs to the late Michael Salash. Born in Penn Allen, she was the daughter of the late Wasyl and Fannie (Pello) Morykin. Fannie worked as a seamstress for various garment factories until retiring in 1978. She was a member of St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Allentown and St. Paul Orthodox Church in Emmaus. She had previously enjoyed participating in St. Mary’s Bowling League.

Daughters- Gloria Walson wife of the late John Walson of Allentown, Jean Diamond of Allentown; Son- Stephen Salash husband of Joanne of Bethlehem; Grandchildren- John M. Walson husband of Michal of Chalfont, Michelle Walson Kuykendall wife of Jeffrey of Brooklyn, NY; Anthony Diamond of Philadelphia, Nicholas Diamond of Bethlehem; two Great Grandchildren- John Joseph Walson and James John Walson Kuykendall; Sisters- Kathryn Pinto of Bangor, Helen Kessler of Penn Argyl, Gloria Ackerson of Penn Argyl; Sister- In- Law- Stephanie Sikorski of Virginia; Many Beloved Nieces and Nephews. She was predeceased by her Brothers- John, Charles and Michael Morykin; Sisters- Mary Morykin, Ann Fedorak, and Eva Bonisese.

Catherine H. Spangenberg
Catherine H. (Tomaschik) Spangenberg, 87, formerly of Allentown and Jim Thorpe, and currently of Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, passed away on April 28, 2016 while she was lovingly held in her daughter Carol’s arms at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center ICU. Born in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen (Michrina) Tomaschik. Catherine was the loving wife of the late Robert Spangenberg, an Allentown firefighter who died at a fire in 1983.
She was one of the early members of the Allentown Fire Fighters Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, where she helped to make pierogies for their fundraisers. She was also an associate member of the Sell Chapel at the Masonic Village. She enjoyed playing in the weekly pinochle and bingo games at the Village. Catherine and her daughters attended reunions of the crew of the USS Spangenberg DE223, which was christened in honor of Robert’s brother Kenneth during WWII.
Catherine cherished her grandchildren and especially enjoyed it when “Nana” and “Aunt Carol” celebrated Catherine’s 87th birthday in November and the Russian Orthodox Christmas Eve Holy Supper with grandsons Robert, David, and their families.
Catherine is survived by her daughter Carol and husband Larry Wolford of Elizabethtown; grandchildren Robert Michael Schulte and wife Monica, David Schulte III and fiancée Jacquelyn Harris, and Megan Righter. She has a great-granddaughter, Greta Marie Schulte. She is also survived by her sisters Dorothy McDonald of Allentown and Betty Bergenstock of Lower Macungie. Catherine loved her “granddog” Pepper and always had treats when Pepper visited her or when she visited him. She held Pepper on the way home from Peaceable Kingdom when he was adopted in 2009.
Catherine was predeceased by her daughter Cathy Schulte; her grandchildren Lornah Schulte and Kenneth Schulte; and her siblings Ann Tomaschik, Eleanor Seagreaves, and John Tomaschik.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday 8:30-9:15 a.m. with Panachyda at 9:15 a.m. in Kohut Funeral Home, Inc. 950 N. Front St. Allentown, PA 18102. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Protection of the BVM Greek Orthodox Church 703 N. 6th St. Allentown, PA 18102. Burial to follow in Laurel Cemetery, Whitehall.
A Memorial Service will be held at Sell Chapel in Masonic Village at a time to be announced.

Catherine Smicker
Catherine "Kitty" (Marhon) Smicker passed away March 14th at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Princeton, NJ, twelve days after celebrating her 100th birthday. She was the wife of the late John Smicker. Born in Gilberton, Pa, she was the daughter of Paul and Mary (Karlisky) Marhon.
Kitty worked at Maiden Fair clothing factory in her younger years then became a devoted Red Cross volunteer at the Good Shepherd Home for 38 cherished years. Her family and friends could find her working in her beautiful flower garden or preparing a scrumptious feast in her kitchen. She was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church and St. Mary's Seniors.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Shirley (Robert) Hunsicker of Princeton, NJ, Linda (Billy) Micklos of Fogelsville; son, Thomas (Darlene) Smicker of Quakertown; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister, Helen Glogowski and sister-in-law, Doris Smicker. She was predeceased by sons Ronald and Johnny and daughter Gail.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 22nd, at 10:00am with services at 11:00am in Kohut Funeral Home, Inc. 950 N. Front Street, Allentown. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
